{"id":127,"date":"2023-11-29T23:28:10","date_gmt":"2023-11-29T23:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unicata.com.br\/?page_id=127"},"modified":"2025-10-21T21:40:55","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T21:40:55","slug":"courses","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/unicata.com.br\/en\/courses\/","title":{"rendered":"Courses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>SUBSECTION 2.1: Description<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNICATA offers a course with 6 modules named \u201cParticipatory Solid waste management and governance with the inclusion of waste pickers for a sustainable and Just society\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Based on Paulo Freire&#8217;s popular education pedagogy, the democracy of knowledge and the practice of peer learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Prepared from a survey carried out with waste pickers in S\u00e3o Paulo in 2022 to understand their aspirations, needs and desires in relation to the possibility of studying.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Content adapted to the specific context of the city where the course is offered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Open to waste pickers with or without completing basic education, avoiding structural barriers and exclusion criteria.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Classes adapted to the needs of students with the use of different means of communication in their academic production (video, audio, group work).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">For each module completed, students receive a certificate of completion of the extension course issued by the University of Victoria (UVic) and the Federal University of ABC (UFABC).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>SUBSECTION 2.1: Format and Content<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The course has 6 modules, with 52 hours of classes and a field visit each.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The content is created collaboratively between academics from partner universities and representatives of the waste pickers, who also teach classes collectively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Before each module, training is carried out with educators, to share the pedagogical approach, methodology and teaching philosophy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Modules of the course:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Module 1 &#8211; Introduction to the course: <\/strong>All themes raised during the research and two<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">workshops by the waste pickers. Module 1 is an introduction to the full course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Module 2 &#8211; Waste Picking:<\/strong> History of the waste pickers movement, waste pickers as social<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">subjects, political education, social exclusion, gender issues, social movements, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Module 3 &#8211; Governance:<\/strong> Regulatory and legislative aspects of waste management,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">extended producer responsibility, reverse logistics, circular economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Module 4 &#8211; Management:<\/strong> Administration, human resources, financial management,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">accounting, computer operations, recycling technologies, safety, health, and good<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">working conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Module 5 &#8211; Environment: <\/strong>Sustainability, environmental education, solid waste and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">environmental impacts, incineration, environmental and climate justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Module 6 &#8211; Research:<\/strong> Research praxis focused on the context of waste pickers (mixed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">research methodologies, research ethics, research project development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following Figure visualizes the thematic groups 1 to 4 corresponding to Module 2 to 5. The content for the classes of Modul 1 is listed on the outside of the ring.
